Kanye West is always opening up about his mental health. The rapper told Big Boy TV in a recent interview that he was “diagnosed with a mental condition” at the age of 39.
Furthermore, West mentioned that “I think everybody got something,” as he continued his interview with Big Boy TV after a listening party for his newly released eighth album, Ye. According to Ye,“like I said on the album, it’s [mental disorder] not a disability. It’s a superpower.” The mega producer and 21 Grammy winner did not reveal his exact diagnosis through the interview, however he did reveal on the song “Yikes” that he is bipolar.
Furthermore, “I hate being bipolar it’s awesome” is written across the Wyoming mountain range, which is featured on the album cover. Hence, Kanye West is provoking great conversations about mental health and he is coercing the black community to have a different perception of such a taboo topic.
In the black community, we often neglect the aspect of mental health as we are expected to be a psychological brick and emotionless.
As a people we have been through a lot, and our post-slavery psychology is messed up as our identity was stripped away.
